Dear Students and Parents, 8/22/2019
Welcome to my 8th Grade Math and Science class. I am looking forward to a fabulous school year with you. This letter will help you get to know me, provide a general overview of how my class operates and what you need to bring each day to be successful.
My name is Laura Beck. I am happily married to my husband Adam. We have two children, Davis and Allie. I have been teaching math at Hudson since 2011, but I have also taught 6th grade math and science at William Lenoir and Integrated Math II at the Early College. I graduated from ASU in 2003 with my bachelor’s degree in Middle Grades math and science. I received my Master’s degree from Gardner-Webb in 2013 and then completed my AIG certification in 2014. You can easily reach me by email at [email protected] or call HMS at 728-4281. I will do my best to return your call during my planning time from 1:40-3:05 or after school. I send out a daily homework email to parents and students for our 8th grade team. I also use a website to communicate important information with you such as daily lesson plans, homework calendar, helpful links, etc. Please make sure you are on my email list and bookmark this site www.beckmath8.weebly.com and check it daily!
Being prepared for class each day is of the utmost importance. Listed below are the supplies you will need for my class each day.
Attendance is very important. You will need to participate in the lesson, hear our class discussions and see the examples we workout in our notebooks. Sending assignments home without hearing the lesson and seeing the examples is not a good substitute for being in class. If you are absent, check the weebly website to see what you have missed and pick up the materials promptly. Catch up on notes and turn in any missing assignments in a timely manner. Remember that you will have an EOG in both math and science in 8th grade. Please try to make appointments after 1:30 so that you don’t miss core instruction (math, science, language arts and social studies).
We have a lot of math concepts to cover including geometry, expressions/equations, inequalities, functions, and statistics/probability that will be broken down into nine units. Students in the advanced math class will also have an extended curriculum to learn which includes concepts from high school Math 1. Science also has nine units including physical science, earth science and life science.
I look forward to working with you in math and science this year. Feel free to contact me anytime you have a question or a problem arises. I want this school year to be the best you’ve ever had! Let’s work together to have a successful school year.
